How can I convince my parents?
Question by Elise: How can I convince my parents?
Ok so I just got my driver’s license a few days ago and ever since I’ve had my permit (it took me 3 years to get my license), my parents have bugged me to get my license. From the start, I always told them “Well if I get my license, I’d want something to drive”. I didn’t mean a new car or anything (although that would be nice) but just maybe like a good, cheap, used one.
Well, now I have my license and we have an SUV that is almost 13 years old but still runs fine & sits in our driveway. But then once I got my license and was like “well may I just use the SUV?”, they were all of a sudden hesitant about putting me on the insurance and everything. I told them I could pay for the insurance & gas because I make enough at my job but they’re still being lame. I even asked if I could buy it from them, but they won’t let me do that either. We have another car but it’s brand-new and I don’t want to wreck it.
What should I do? I hate sitting at home when it took me so long to get my license and I can’t even go anywhere. I would buy my own car but I’m in college and really should be saving up for loans I’ll have to pay back.

Welp, they sure sound lame to me
Did they refuse to let you drive the SUV or were they just hesitant? Either way they should because you must be at least 19. They still don’t trust you? That’s pretty bad.
Try for the SUV I guess

I would sit with your parents and say exactly what you have just written here. It’s a good argument for why you should be allowed to drive the SUV….the worst they can do is say no.
Yeah, just argue it like the person above said. Sounds to me like if no one drives it, and its fairly old, then why can’t you drive it?
Have you been taught how to drive an SUV? In the hands of an inexperienced driver they can be as lethal as a sports GT. You only start learning how to handle a car by using them. You’re not a real driver till you’ve a few hundred miles under your belt. The fact you use the term “wreck it” in your posting says even you recognise your inexperience behind the wheel. Just something to think about.
