Would a 2005 Prius be salvage-titled for anything other than frame damage?

In California — Looks great, 26000 miles, $13000 (going rate for clear title seems to be $18000+) , seller said I can have it inspected at a diagnostic place if I want….but I don’t want to be a fool…I know frame damage is common in front-end accidents (not sure if where the repaired damage occurred yet). If it passes an inspection how bad a risk am I taking? Any other common problems I should watch out for, or that might be missed by a diagnostic? This is for 100+ city-miles a day every day for the next 3-5 years so if it’s not a lemon I will drive it into the ground and make money off the mileage rate tax deduction…

maybe it’s one of the flooded cars that came out of new orleans? seems a little fishy, I would not take a chance on this car. have you run a carfax report on it yet?

Salvage titles can be for almost any kind of major damage that had extensive repairs or replacements. My guess is that, as the previous answer stated, that it came from the flood areas in the Southeast. Water damage can still be discovered in a *good* diagnostic, so find someone who has a reputable shop and let them go to it. If they don’t find anything, enjoy your 100+ mile drive!

Salvage is not just frame damage – and frame damage alone will not make a car salvage.
1 – a prius is what they call a unibody car – there actually is no frame on it. But repaired damage to the unibody is called frame damage by most states dmv’s or auto auctions.
Salvage means it was wrecked – in most states – damages over 70% of the value of the car.
Some states allow the salvaged cars to be rebuilt – then they are inspected by that state to make sure they pass safety tests on the repairs that were made.

Salvage cars are also exempt from any manufacturers warranty – only warranty you will get is if the state you live in gives a warranty to the buyer – were I live a 2005 Prius with 25k miles would get a 90 day 3000 mile warranty by state law from the dealer.

I would stay away from it totally – especially a prius that is a hybrid car – god only knows what was damaged on the car and fixed.

I am a used car dealer. Any car with a salvaged title is a roll of the dice. You are going to be driving 100 miles/day for the next 3-5 years, or 1/2 way to the moon by the time it’s all said and done. Run a carfax, but that won’t show you everything. That car might have been flooded, rolled in a ditch, t-boned by some SUV, caught on fire, you get my meaning, as a dealer I will not touch them. Sounds like you are a price buyer, looking for the bargain of the century, you are better off buying a used Corolla with a clean title. That is more of a safe bet, and those cars get close to 35-40 miles to the gallon.

personally i would not buy any vehicle that i know has been in a wreck…ask any line up guy and he will tell you, you will spend a fortune on tires and trying to keep it lined up…no amount of “fixing” can get a properly aligned after front end damage, because honestly the whole car has been moved on its frame so with that many miles to travel i would suggest a small lower cost car, toyota are great, and they are like timex and keep on ticking, i have seen them with over 300,000 miles on them…just keep up the maintaince and any vehicle new should not give you a problem..good luck
note: salvage title can be flood damage too…so you may think about that too
